The Society of Mining Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) Minexchange is the biggest mining event in the US, over 5000 people attended. This conference gathers the most important representatives of the mining, metallurgical, and exploration industries, as well as many people from the academy. During this event, an exhibit hall is open to network and obtain further information about the companies and the universities that have a booth there. Also in parallel, over 200 technical sessions are held in different conference rooms. Regarding the graduate poster contents, more than 40 graduate students (master's and Ph.D. candidates) presented their research work. This presentation had to be done in less than 4 minutes, and the poster had to be visually compelling. Each of the students presented their work to one judge. After the presentation, 5 winners were selected, with New Mexico Tech taking the top three positions. All three students were working on their research under the supervision of Dr. Pedram Roghanchi.

Earth & Environmental Science, Mechanical Engineering and Physics departments held a successful combined recruiting event on March 8th, 2024. The event included common activities designed to show the strength of NMT and our graduate community. In addition, each department had their own events specific to them. Many thanks to Dr. Ryan Leary (EES), Dr. Michael Hargather (MENG) and Dr. Ryan Norris (Physics) for organizing the event and to our graduate student that supported it.

GSA Officer Elections
Message from GSA President - Dylan Purcell
The 2024-2025 GSA officer election is coming up quickly. Our yearly election cycle consists of a nomination period during which you may nominate yourself or others for officer election, a voting period during which confirmed nominations are placed on a ballot and sent out to the graduate body, and the officer transition during the final meeting of the semester, where the previous officers officially hand over responsibilities.
Our elections are very important here at Tech. As a student government body independent of the SGA, we try to serve the specific needs of the graduate students, and lobby on their behalf to administration, faculty, and the SGA. However, this requires a strong and unified officer council to keep operations running smoothly, as the job is simply too much for any one person, and so filling out our officer positions (President, VP, Appropriations, Information, Events, and Grants) is critical for ensuring a smooth continuation of our services. In addition, we do have influence on our school at large; community events we run are well-attended, services we help to organize with other offices are targeted to fill in gaps as we find them, and our voice can help to make relevant policy decisions at high levels, something that I expect will grow further with the upcoming change of administration.
This year, we will be opening the nomination period during spring break, and keep it open until the 31st of March (check your inboxes for reminder emails about the process). After we confirm all the nominations, the election poll will be sent out on the 2nd or 3rd of April and will be open for 2 weeks. As I am not running for office again, I will be overseeing this election as per our constitution. If you have any questions about the different officer positions, responsibilities, or GSA operations, feel free to contact me at gsa@npe.nmt.edu, and I will try my best to answer as quickly as possible.
