NMT Graduate student, Ms. Nusrat Yeasmin won a prestigious scholarship from the American Society of Materials (ASM International). ASM is a highly prestigious professional society focusing on materials research and each year the scholarship awardees are selected from a pool of competitive applicants. This year, Nusrat Yeasmin was the first-place holder in the graduate student category for this scholarship and she is the only grad student from New Mexico Tech who got this prestigious scholarship award.
Nusrat is an MS student in the Chemistry department of Tech and working with Dr. Arjak Bhattacharjee for her MS thesis on chemically modified antibacterial natural medicinal compounds with bioceramic materials for various dental applications. Her additional research area is on the understanding of cement chemistry as a function of plastic waste incorporation in sustainable concrete. She has been awarded this prestigious scholarship in the Rio Grande symposium in Albuquerque (Oct. 21, 2024), organized by ASM International and Sandia National Laboratories. Additionally, she also presented a research poster in this symposium based on her research work on antibacterial natural medicinal compounds and bioceramic materials for dental applications.
Nusrat is originally from Bangladesh and received her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. During her free time, she loves listening to music and spending time with her family and friends.

Green Chile Roast and Festival of Nations
|
The International Student Office, the Graduate Student Association, and the CLASS Department— organized the annual International Student Green Chile Roast and Festival of Nations on Friday, October 4 featuring an international potluck with foods from Russia, Belarus, Vietnam, Australia, Poland, Ghana, Nigeria, African American meals and New Mexico US cuisines.
With more than 150 students, faculty, staff and community members the event was a tremendous success. Many thanks to the organizing committee consisted of Valerie Maez (NMT International Programs), Mercy Ike Ajigah (Graduate Student Association), and Steve Simpson (Dean of Arts and Sciences).
Thanks to the cuisines committee that made the dishes and volunteered to serve consisting of Donna Christie Essel, Sarah Moses, Yan Pozhanka, Ann Duy Huynh, M Pozhanka, Bushra Uddin, Rifat Khan and Samuel Mohammed Maimako
And thanks to the volunteers committee that setup the venue including Hannah Morgan Smith Myers, Nursat Nur, Md Golam Zakaria, Biswajit Ghose, Alhassan Abdul Malik, Millicent Okyere Williams, Ebenezer Gyamfi-Yeboah, Leonardo Quirino Olvera, Ali Beris, the GSA Executive Body, among others.
Also, thanks to the Writing and Communication Lab tutors who worked the chile table: Arianna Albers, Emmanuel Acheampong, and Harrison Kaspar. Volunteer turnout from the Graduate Student Association was outstanding.

Time/Space to work on your thesis/dissertation
The Office of Graduate Studies will weekly announce on our website times when graduate students can come and work in our conference room on their thesis/dissertation. During this time you can focus on writing and you can ask questions as they come up whether about formatting, completion, copyright, plagiarism, etc. This is in addition to the services offered by the Writing & Communication Lab (WCL). If you are looking for writing support the WCL would be a much better resource. Please see below.

This is a tutoring resource committed to helping students become better writers and communicators through tailored and individual consultations. Tutors are experienced in STEM writing and offer consultations both in person and online, to undergraduate and graduate students. These resources are also available to our Distance Students as well so please take advantage.

November 25th
Fall 2024 - Completion Paperwork
To graduate in Fall 2024, please ensure the following paperwork is submitted by November 25th, 2024:
Thesis Submission: Submit the completed report of the advisory committee, the iThenticate report from your academic advisor, and the ProQuest submission of the final thesis/dissertation to the Center for Graduate Studies.
Independent Study: Submit one final copy of the accepted independent study paper to your advisor and advisory committee.

Student degrees are not complete until final materials have been approved by the Center for Graduate Studies and the student receives final acceptance via email from the ProQuest system. Students are encouraged to submit their thesis/dissertation drafts earlier to ensure that it will be accepted by the Registrar's deadline.
